   - Field boots: These are described as English riding boots, they are tall boots that go almost to the knee, and their main advantage of this style of boot is that they give to the riders flexibility and comfortability, as they are more comfortable than other types of booths such as the jumping or general riding boots.

   - Western riding boots: Western riding boots are also known as cowboy boots, and they are different from other boots in many ways, for example, their heel is usually higher and the shat shortet, which helps them to fit wider. Most of them do not usually have laces.

   - Jodhpur boots: Jodhpur  boots are a short ankle boot that is usually easy to slip on. Jodhpurs, in their modern form, are tight-fitting trousers to the ankle, where they end in a snug cuff, and are worn primarily for horse riding. The term is also used as slang for a type of short riding boot, also called a paddock boot or a jodhpur boot, because they are worn with jodhpurs. Due to the fact that they are nice and short, these boots are often confused with paddock boots.

   - Paddock boots:  Paddock boots are short laced ankle boots, which have been typically used by children. Even though they are typical riding boots for children they have been also used for adults.

How do I choose riding boots?

We have mentioned before that there are many types of different boots, so, in this sense, how do we choose them? Do I need riding boots with leather? Do I need dressage or western riding boots? Do I need riding boots with an extra wide calf? And, going further, a final decision will be related to helping the colour of our boots to fit our outfit.

Therefore, once we have defined some of the main types of riding boots, we will need to have many additional factors in order to choose riding boots, sometimes will even need more than one type in our closet in order to fit different weathers, types of sport, or even outfits. What is a mid-calf riding boot?

Mid-calf boots are also called “knee boots” because they’re taller than ankle boots, but they can rise all the way up to the knee.

Mid-calf options are one of the most discouraging riding boots to wear, and this is because the edge of the boot usually comes between the ankle and the knee, making it difficult to figure out exactly which dress lengths and which jeans will complement the outfit. Therefore, they are not as smart or elegant as the long boot.

The main advantage of this type of riding boots is that they are Easy to slip on and comfortable, especially in hot weather when a long boot may be sweaty. It is a general-purpose boot that is usually sturdy enough to stand up to everyday use in the yard.

Short riding boots should be teamed with jodhpurs and either half chaps that cover the lower leg, or jodhpur clips (an elastic strap connection the bottom of the jodhpurs under the arch of the sole of the boots, to prevent the jodhpurs from riding up or twisting).

Can you wear ankle boots for horse riding?

There are different types of boots depending on their length, as we have addressed before: ankle riding boots, knee high riding boots, lace-up riding boots, and short riding boots.

We have already talked about the advantages and disadvantages of short and long riding boots, but what about ankle boots?  Well, a good pair of horse riding ankle boots are comfortable and durable, but they are recommended for yard activities.

On the other hand, horse riding ankle boots can be worn with half chaps to become competition appropriate.

We always have to remember, in this sense, that a good riding boot need to be developed with high enough up the leg to prevent the leathers of the saddle from pinching the leg of the rider, has a sturdy toe to protect the rider's foot when on the ground and has a distinct heel to prevent the foot from sliding through the stirrup.

How to fit your riding boots?

In order to acquire the perfect riding boots, another thing you will have to take into consideration is that they are the perfect fit for the rider. To get the perfect fit for your boots, it is very important to measure, and we are going to help you do it with two main tips:

First of all, you need the standard sizing of your feet: are you looking for riding boots for children? Then you will have to take into consideration that they will change their size, so choose the correct timing to buy them. Secondly, you will need to know the width of your calf and the length of your lower leg (from the back of your knees to the floor).

The best way of sizing these measurements accurately is to make sure that you are sitting down with your leg bent and foot on the floor.

How do I choose my perfect riding boots?

If you are starting in horse riding and you need some advice about which type of riding boots are perfect for you, here we describe 3 essential tips to help you choosing correctly:

   - First of all, think about your discipline of riding, there are many types of boots and we need to choose the one is going to fit better for us and for our horses depending on the discipline we are going to practice: for example, tall boots are meant to be worn for field, or dressage. Find out about your discipline and the commonly used boots in that modality.

   - Prioritize comfort and fit: If the boots don't fit well, or are uncomfortable, you won't enjoy the sport, and neither will the horse.

   - Ask for help: If you are a beginner at riding, or even just replaced worn out boots, ask your instructor and fellow riders for suggestions on the right boots, as they may have made some mistakes when they started riding that you won't want to repeat.
